205 Rwandans returning from DR Congo were received at the Rubavu border.

A group of 205 Rwandan nationals who had been living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have returned to Rwanda, crossing through the main border post in Rubavu District.

The returnees arrived on Thursday, March 12, 2026, where they were welcomed by the Vice Mayor of Rubavu District in charge of Social Affairs, Ishimwe Pacifique.

Most of the returnees are women and children, including many who were born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Speaking to Rwanda Broadcasting Agency, some of them said they decided to return after being encouraged by fellow Rwandans who had previously gone back home and managed to rebuild their lives.

Many of the returnees said they had spent years living under the control of fighters from the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, an armed group operating in the forests of eastern DR Congo.

However, since the Alliance Fleuve Congo and the March 23 Movement began controlling several areas in eastern DR Congo, some Rwandans say the improved security situation has given them the opportunity to return home.

With support from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Rwandans who wish to return are being assisted to repatriate voluntarily and start a new life in their homeland.

Some returnees said they decided to go back home after hearing positive stories from fellow Rwandans who had already returned.
