Switzerland Blocks U.S. Military Aircraft Linked to Iran Conflict from Its Airspace

Switzerland has denied access to its airspace for U.S. military aircraft connected to the ongoing conflict involving Iran. Switzerland is known for its long-standing policy of neutrality and its commitment to avoiding involvement in military conflicts between other nations.

In a statement released on Saturday, March 14, the Swiss government said it had rejected a request from two United States reconnaissance aircraft that sought permission to fly through Swiss airspace.

However, three other U.S. aircraft, two passenger planes and one cargo aircraft, were granted permission to pass through.

The statement further noted that U.S. flights exceeding the usual number that transit through Swiss airspace will not be authorized unless the purpose of the journey is clearly known and not related to military operations.

Under Switzerland’s neutrality laws, parties involved in armed conflict are prohibited from using Swiss airspace for military purposes.
