The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has announced the start of “limited and targeted ground operations” in southern Lebanon as clashes with Hezbollah intensify around the strategic town of Khiam.

According to reports from Al Jazeera Arabic, at least three air strikes hit the city of Khiam on Monday as Israeli forces increased their military pressure on Hezbollah positions in the region.

Khiam is considered one of Hezbollah’s key strongholds and holds strategic importance due to its location on high ground near the Israeli border and the Litani River.

The town provides a commanding view over northern Israel and surrounding Lebanese plains, making it a significant military position for both sides.

The latest escalation follows rocket attacks launched by Hezbollah after the reported killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

Hezbollah had largely refrained from attacking Israel since the 2024 ceasefire, despite repeated accusations of violations of the United States-brokered agreement.

On Monday morning, Israeli air raids also targeted the town of Yater, though there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

Additional strikes were reported in the towns of Burj Qalawiya, Sultaniya and Chaqra, as well as Qantara and As-Sawana.

In a statement, the Israeli military said troops from the IDF’s 91st Division had begun operations aimed at targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and fighters in order to strengthen Israel’s forward defence line.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said the ground offensive was intended to eliminate security threats and protect residents in northern Israel. He also stated that many residents of southern Lebanon who had fled the fighting would not return to areas south of the Litani River until security for northern Israeli communities is ensured.

Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation in Lebanon continues to deteriorate. According to reports cited by Al Jazeera, more than 800,000 people have been displaced from their homes due to Israeli evacuation orders and ongoing bombardment across southern Lebanon and parts of Beirut.

Israeli attacks in Lebanon have so far killed at least 850 people, including 107 children and 66 women, raising international concerns over the growing civilian toll as the conflict continues to expand across the region.
