Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) has revealed that 4,192 people experienced trauma related to the 1994 genocide against Tutsi during the 2025 commemoration period, including 10% who were born after the genocide.

The figures were announced on April 2, 2026 by Dr. Darius Gishoma, head of the Mental Health Division at RBC.

According to RBC, 2,666 people experienced trauma at commemoration sites, while 1,526 were affected in their homes or other locations.

Among those affected, 90% were aged over 31, while 10% were youth aged between 18 and 30.

Dr. Gishoma explained that although the numbers remain significant, they have gradually decreased over the years.

He said that between 2010 and 2015, more than 4,000 people experienced trauma at commemoration sites alone, but the number has now reduced to just over 2,000 cases.

“These figures show the progress Rwandans are making in rebuilding their lives and overcoming trauma,” he said, adding that support efforts will continue to help survivors heal.

RBC also revealed that 36% of those affected by trauma had other health conditions, including HIV/AIDS, hypertension, diabetes and cancer, some linked to experiences during the genocide.

Mental health specialists also warned that young people sometimes develop trauma after learning painful family histories. According to Dr. Uwihoreye Chaste, a psychology lecturer at the University of Rwanda, identity-related questions can lead young people to explore difficult stories from the past, which may trigger emotional distress.

Experts urge families and communities to stay close to people who experience trauma during the commemoration period, listen to them and offer emotional support.

Health professionals say common trauma symptoms include reliving painful memories, avoiding reminders of the past, intense fear or anxiety, and feelings of hopelessness, stressing that affected individuals should receive medical and psychological support.
