Pakistan is increasingly drawing international attention for its emerging role in attempting to mediate tensions between Iran and the United States as relations between the two countries remain strained.
Although many observers were surprised to see Pakistan stepping into this role, several factors explain why the move may not be entirely unexpected. Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, is said to maintain close ties with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has publicly praised him and acknowledged his understanding of Iran-related issues.
Pakistan and Iran share a border of about 900 kilometers and maintain long-standing cultural, religious and diplomatic ties often described as fraternal relations. This geographic and historical connection places Pakistan in a unique position to potentially serve as a trusted intermediary between Tehran and Washington.
Another factor contributing to Pakistan’s potential mediation role is that it does not host American military bases on its territory and is not directly involved in the conflict. This allows it to present itself as a relatively neutral actor that may be acceptable to both sides.
However, some analysts question whether Pakistan can effectively serve as a mediator given its own regional tensions. Recently, Pakistan carried out strikes in Afghanistan, and its long-standing rivalry with India has intensified, raising concerns about stability in a region where both countries possess nuclear weapons.
Despite these challenges, Pakistan continues to intensify diplomatic efforts, reportedly passing messages between Iran and the United States, hosting leaders from several Islamic nations concerned by the crisis, and using multiple diplomatic channels to encourage dialogue.
For now, Pakistan appears to be walking a delicate line—balancing its national interests while trying to build confidence as a possible mediator between two of the world’s most influential powers.
