The electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is reportedly preparing to introduce a new line of cheaper electric cars aimed at making the technology more affordable for a wider range of customers.
According to sources involved in the project, cited by Reuters, the new vehicles are expected to cost less than $34,000 in China and under $37,000 in the United States. This would mark the first time Tesla offers electric vehicles at such a relatively low price compared to its current models.
Sources indicated that Tesla is working closely with suppliers to use different components from those used in its current models such as the Tesla Model 3 and the Tesla Model Y. These changes are intended to reduce production costs and make the vehicles more accessible to consumers.
Reports suggest that the new vehicles will initially be produced in China, although Tesla plans to expand their availability to markets including the United States and Europe.
This project marks a shift from a decision made in 2024 by Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk, who had announced that the company would halt plans for low-cost electric vehicles in order to focus on other projects.
At the time, Musk stated that Tesla would prioritize developing autonomous vehicles capable of operating without a driver, as well as humanoid robots.
However, many observers are now questioning whether Tesla’s renewed interest in cheaper electric cars is aimed at regaining market share in the growing electric vehicle industry or simply a strategy to produce more affordable models for a broader market.
The new vehicles are expected to be priced below the company’s current entry-level models. One factor that could lower the cost is the use of cheaper battery technology. As a result, the vehicles may have a driving range of about 306 kilometers on a full charge, slightly lower than the approximately 327 kilometers offered by the Tesla Model Y.
