Coventry City, coached by Frank Lampard, has secured promotion to the English Premier League after 9,113 days away from the top flight.
Coventry achieved this milestone on Friday, April 17, 2026, after drawing 1-1 with Blackburn Rovers in their Matchday 43 fixture.
The draw was enough to confirm promotion, as Coventry moved to 86 points with only three matches remaining in the EFL Championship. They now sit 13 points ahead of third-placed Millwall, making it mathematically impossible to be overtaken.
Coventry last played in the Premier League in 2001, when they were relegated after a 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa, ending a 34-year stay in the top division.
Following relegation, the club faced financial difficulties that saw them drop as far as the third and even fourth tier, including competing in League Two during the 2017–18 season.
At the start of this season, Coventry was not widely considered a promotion contender, making their success under Lampard a remarkable achievement.
Key players in their promotion campaign include goalkeeper Carl Rushworth (on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion), Frank Onyeka (loaned from Brentford), Romain Esse (loaned from Crystal Palace), and top scorer Haji Wright.
