The AFC/M23 coalition has announced that its fighters killed five armed assailants who attempted to disrupt security in Goma after reportedly entering from Virunga National Park.

The incident occurred overnight between March 15 and 16, 2026, when heavy gunfire was reported for nearly two hours in several outskirts of the city, including Mugunga, CCK in Kyeshero, and Ndosho.

According to local accounts, the attackers suspected to be part of armed groups allegedly linked to forces supporting the Congolese government attempted to carry out looting operations targeting shops in the affected neighborhoods. AFC/M23 forces intervened, engaging the assailants in an operation aimed at restoring calm.

Residents said the attackers tried to break into businesses and steal goods but were unsuccessful due to the swift response.

“We don’t know what drove them, but they broke doors and tried to loot shops. We are grateful for the quick intervention because everything would have been taken,” one resident said.

Goma’s mayor, Julien Katembo, confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers had attempted to destabilize the city but were neutralized by AFC/M23 fighters.

“During the night, armed bandits coming from the park tried to disrupt the security of our population. AFC/M23 forces remained vigilant and managed to eliminate five of them,” he said.

Mayor Katembo further warned that Virunga National Park continues to harbor armed groups seeking to destabilize areas under AFC/M23 control, adding that efforts would continue to pursue them and dismantle their positions.

AFC/M23 has called on residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with security forces, and share any information that could help prevent further insecurity in the city.
