Students at the University of Rwanda, Huye campus, on Wednesday attended an awareness session focused on the responsible use of social media and digital platforms.

The discussions were led by Dr. Murangira B. Thierry, spokesperson of the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), who educated students on the risks associated with misuse of technology and how to avoid cyber-related crimes.

During the session, Dr. Murangira emphasized that accessing another person’s phone without their consent is a criminal offense, even in cases where individuals are married. He urged students to remain vigilant and law-abiding, stressing that ignorance of the law is not a valid excuse before justice.

He also warned against online financial scams targeting young people, particularly schemes that promise quick profits through digital investments. According to him, such operations often deceive victims by initially returning small amounts of money before eventually defrauding them entirely.

In addition, students were encouraged to be cautious about the content they share online. Dr. Murangira reminded them that although social media accounts are personal, the information posted can be accessed by a wide audience. He advised young people to use these platforms productively, such as for marketing and professional growth, while strictly avoiding unlawful activities.

The session forms part of ongoing efforts to promote digital responsibility among youth in Rwanda, as authorities seek to curb the rising cases of cybercrime linked to misuse of online platforms.
