Guinea Dissolves Dozens of Political Parties in Government Crackdown

President Mamadi Doumbouya has signed a decree dissolving around 40 political parties, including three major opposition groups, in Guinea.

The decree, issued on March 7, 2026, states that the parties were dissolved for failing to fulfill their legal responsibilities as political organizations. It also strips them of the right to control their assets.

Guinea currently has about 125 registered political parties, making the decision one of the most significant political reorganizations in recent years.

The move comes shortly after Doumbouya secured another term in office following the presidential election held on December 28, 2025. In that vote, he defeated eight other candidates, including former government officials and opposition figures.

Some of the affected parties have criticized the decision, describing it as an authoritarian move carried out in the name of government reform.

This is not the first controversial action taken by Doumbouya’s administration. In 2024, he dissolved the government and temporarily closed the country’s borders as part of a broader political restructuring.

President Mamadi Doumbouya has ordered the dissolution of about 40 political parties, including several opposition groups, in Guinea.
