At least 30 people have died in a stampede at the entrance of the historic Citadelle Laferrière, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Haiti.

The tragedy occurred on April 11, 2026, in the northern region of Milot, where the landmark is located. Built in the early 19th century after Haiti gained independence, the Citadelle is one of the country’s most important historical monuments.

On the day of the incident, the site was crowded with students on school trips and other visitors attending Easter celebrations.

Witnesses said the stampede was triggered by heavy rainfall, which caused panic among the crowd as people rushed toward the building’s entrance seeking shelter.

Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé expressed condolences to the victims’ families, saying he was deeply saddened by the tragedy and stood in solidarity with those affected.

Authorities confirmed that 30 people have died, but warned the number could rise as investigations continue.
