The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed responsibility for shooting down a United States F-35 fighter jet, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing confrontation between Iran and United States.
In a statement, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the aircraft sustained heavy damage after being targeted, forcing it to make an emergency landing at a nearby military base. However, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, with the IRGC suggesting the jet may have been completely destroyed.
The US military confirmed the incident but downplayed the extent of the damage. According to Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for US forces in the Middle East, the pilot managed to safely land the aircraft shortly after it was hit and is in stable condition.
While US officials did not specify the weapon used, reports by CNN indicate the jet may have been targeted by Iranian-made surface-to-air missiles, reportedly known as the “358” system, designed to intercept both manned aircraft and drones at long range.
Military analysts note that Iran has increasingly relied on advanced drone and missile technology in recent confrontations. Systems such as the Shahed-136 drones and Abu Mahdi cruise missiles are known for their ability to adjust flight paths mid-air, making them harder to intercept.
The F-35 Lightning II is among the most advanced fighter jets in the world, valued at approximately $100 million. It features stealth capabilities, high-speed maneuverability, and advanced radar systems capable of detecting threats from long distances.
This incident could represent one of the most serious direct engagements involving US military aircraft in the current conflict. Although the United States has previously lost aircraft due to accidents and friendly fire incidents, this would mark a rare case of a frontline stealth jet being successfully targeted by an adversary.
