Authorities in Kenya have warned of a possible new disease outbreak linked to Malaria following heavy rainfall that has continued to fall in several parts of the country.

The warning was issued on Saturday, April 4, 2026, in a new report released by the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD). The report indicates that areas experiencing prolonged rainfall could face an increased risk of malaria-related outbreaks.

According to the report, western parts of the country, especially Kisii County, are among the most vulnerable regions during the current rainy season in April. Authorities estimate that residents in this area could face up to a 100% risk of exposure due to environmental conditions favorable for mosquito breeding.

Other counties highlighted in the report include Nandi County, where about 60% of residents could be at risk, and Kakamega County, where the risk level is estimated at around 27.3%.

KMD explained that continued heavy rainfall combined with local environmental conditions may accelerate mosquito breeding, increasing the spread of malaria beyond its usual seasonal levels.

To prevent a potential outbreak, the government of Kenya has urged residents particularly those in high-risk areas to take preventive measures. These include clearing bushes around homes, draining stagnant water, using insecticide-treated mosquito nets, and seeking medical attention immediately if malaria symptoms appear.

According to the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 282 million malaria cases were recorded globally between 2024 and 2025, with approximately 610,000 deaths. In Kenya alone, more than five million infections were reported, raising concerns among health authorities.
