The Skytrax has ranked Kigali International Airport as the best airport in its region and the 8th best in Africa for 2026.
According to the report released on March 19, 2026, the airport stood out due to its modern infrastructure, cleanliness, high-quality services—including food and beverage offerings—as well as its calm and secure environment.
Skytrax noted that Kigali International Airport, despite being relatively small, continues to handle a growing number of passengers, largely driven by the expansion of RwandAir.
The rankings are based on a star rating system that evaluates various services, with five stars being the highest level. Kigali International Airport received strong ratings, particularly for minimizing long walking distances, efficient communication, and multilingual staff support.
However, the report highlighted areas for improvement, including high prices of food and other products, as well as the need to expand retail options to give passengers more choices.
Across Africa, Cape Town International Airport ranked first, praised for its advanced infrastructure and premium services favored by tourists and high-end travelers. It is also the only airport on the continent to receive a four-star rating.
Second place went to O.R. Tambo International Airport, known for being Africa’s busiest airport and a major global hub, while Marrakesh Menara Airport ranked third, recognized for its architectural design and passenger experience.
Other airports in the top 10 include King Shaka International Airport in South Africa, Mohammed V International Airport in Morocco, Cairo International Airport in Egypt, and Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport in Mauritius.
Kigali International Airport has the capacity to accommodate more than 50 aircraft and was awarded a three-star rating across its services.
