French President Emmanuel Macron has announced plans to increase France’s nuclear stockpile, saying the time has come to strengthen the country’s deterrence capabilities in response to growing global instability.
Speaking on March 2, 2026, during a visit to the Île Longue naval base in Brittany home to France’s nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, Macron stressed that European nations must take greater responsibility for their own security rather than relying heavily on external allies.
“What I want above all, as you must understand, is for Europeans to take their future into their own hands,” Macron said.
France currently possesses fewer than 300 nuclear warheads and remains the only European Union country with nuclear weapons. The arsenal has not been expanded since 1992. However, Macron indicated that the changing global security landscape now requires a reassessment.
“I have decided to increase the number of nuclear weapons in our stockpile,” he said. “My responsibility is to ensure that our defense maintains a credible and enduring deterrent capability for the future.”
Macron emphasized that a sufficiently strong nuclear deterrent would discourage any potential aggressor. “No country, no matter how powerful, could ignore them, and no nation, however large, would escape their consequences,” he stated.
France’s decision follows calls made in February 2026 by the United States urging allied nations to invest more heavily in their own defense capabilities rather than relying primarily on American protection.
The announcement also comes as Western nations continue to grapple with Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022 and has resulted in significant civilian casualties and infrastructure destruction.
European leaders remain concerned that if Russia consolidates control over Ukraine, it could pose broader security risks to the region.
Macron’s remarks were delivered amid escalating conflict in the Middle East, where since February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel have been engaged in intense hostilities with Iran involving missiles, drones, naval forces, and advanced aircraft.
