A man identified as Kwizera Eric is being held at the Nyakabuye station of the Rwanda Investigation Bureau on suspicion of attempting to burn his wife and children inside their house following a dispute over money.

The incident occurred on April 2, 2026, in Cyamura Village, Mashyuza Cell, Nyakabuye Sector in Rusizi District.

According to local authorities, Kwizera reportedly asked his wife, Uzaribara Jacqueline, to share with him 80,000 Rwandan francs she had received from a savings group. When she refused, the man allegedly set a mattress on fire inside their house in an attempt to burn her along with their three children.

Fortunately, the woman and the children managed to escape from the house unharmed before the fire spread.

The Executive Secretary of Nyakabuye Sector commended residents who quickly intervened and helped extinguish the fire before it could destroy the entire house.

He explained that the suspect has a history of misconduct and had only recently been released from a rehabilitation center where he had been sent due to alcohol abuse and violent behavior.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect was immediately arrested and is currently detained at the Nyakabuye station of the Rwanda Investigation Bureau as investigations continue.
