Rwanda has commenced the construction of a National Military University in Bumbogo Sector, Gasabo District, in a move aimed at strengthening advanced training, research, and strategic leadership in security and defense.

The development was confirmed by Ronald Rwivanga, spokesperson of the Rwanda Defence Force, who noted that the institution will play a key role in preparing military and security personnel to respond to evolving security challenges.

Focus on Advanced Training and Research

According to Brig Gen Rwivanga, the university is expected to deliver high-level academic programs, including degrees, diplomas, and internationally recognized certifications. It will focus on professional military education, research, and innovation in security-related fields.

The institution will also serve as a central hub, bringing together existing military colleges and training schools, as well as institutions linked to the police and intelligence services such as the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS).

Regional and International Outlook

The university is designed to admit not only Rwandan military personnel but also students from other security institutions and international participants. It will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral (PhD) programs aligned with global standards in military education.

Officials say the curriculum will integrate academic learning with professional training, ensuring that students are equipped with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Enhancing Quality and Cooperation

The new institution will oversee all higher education programs offered within Rwanda’s military training system, ensuring quality, standardization, and relevance to modern security needs.

It is also expected to strengthen partnerships with leading military academies worldwide, promoting collaboration in research and knowledge exchange.

“The National Military University will advance research in defense technology and leverage partnerships with modern military institutions globally,” Rwivanga said.

Leadership and Structure

The university will be headed by a Vice Chancellor, supported by two deputies, and will comprise multiple colleges and specialized schools dedicated to different areas of military and security studies.

Authorities believe the project will significantly enhance Rwanda’s capacity to train strategic leaders, promote innovation in defense, and reinforce a knowledge-based approach to national and regional security.
