Rwanda Calls for End to Iran’s Attacks, Urges Protection of Civilians and Sovereignty

The Government of has called for an immediate end to what it described as Iran’s provocative attacks on countries in the Middle East, emphasizing the need to respect national sovereignty and protect civilians and critical infrastructure.

The position was expressed on March 25, 2026, in during a session of the , where a resolution condemning Iran’s actions against regional states was discussed.

Iran has been accused of targeting several neighboring countries. These attacks reportedly followed retaliatory actions after strikes launched on Iran by the United States and Israel on February 28, 2026.

According to reports, Iranian strikes have hit both military-linked targets and civilian infrastructure such as hotels and airports. Iran has also faced criticism for its decision to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route through which nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes, raising concerns about global economic stability.

Rwanda supported the resolution condemning these actions. Speaking at the session, Edmond Tubanambazi, First Counsellor at Rwanda’s embassy in Switzerland and its UN mission in Geneva, expressed concern over the escalating conflict.

He stressed that protecting civilians, safeguarding infrastructure, and respecting the sovereignty of all nations are fundamental obligations under international law. Rwanda also called for an immediate ceasefire, the reopening of key maritime trade routes, and urgent measures to ensure civilian safety.

Tubanambazi further emphasized the importance of prioritizing diplomatic solutions to resolve the crisis and prevent further escalation.

Rwanda maintains strong bilateral relations with several of the affected Gulf countries. For instance, is a key partner in aviation and infrastructure, including its involvement in the construction of the new Bugesera International Airport. The is one of Rwanda’s major trade partners, while collaborates with Rwanda in sectors such as agriculture, health, and commerce.

Additionally, Rwanda and recently signed multiple cooperation agreements covering transport, technology, and logistics, further highlighting the importance of stability in the region for Rwanda’s international partnerships.

Rwanda reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy remain the most viable path toward lasting peace in the Middle East.
