Rwanda Has Sufficient Fuel Reserves, Set to Double Storage Capacity in Three Years

Rwanda’s Deputy Government Spokesperson, Uwera Jean Maurice, has assured the public that the country has sufficient fuel reserves and plans are underway to double storage capacity within the next three years.

He made the remarks following the announcement of new fuel prices by RURA, which had raised concerns among citizens about possible shortages.

He said, “We have enough fuel in storage, and there are measures in place to increase it. We plan to double fuel storage capacity within the next three years.”

The new prices took effect on Friday, April 17, 2026, with petrol rising to 2,938 Rwandan francs per liter from 2,303 Rwf. Meanwhile, diesel prices remained unchanged at 2,205 Rwf per liter.

In a message shared on X, Uwera explained that the government introduced subsidies on diesel to prevent a sharp rise in transport and market prices, given its key role in logistics and public transport.

He stated, “Diesel has not increased significantly due to government measures, as it is widely used in transporting goods and people. Most heavy vehicles do not use petrol, and diesel is also essential in industrial operations.”

He also urged citizens to limit non-essential travel and encouraged carpooling where possible to help conserve fuel.

The rise in global fuel prices is linked to the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, which began on February 28, 2026. Although a two-week ceasefire started on April 7, its economic effects are still being felt.

The conflict led Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz, a key route through which about 20% of the world’s oil supply passes, disrupting global markets.

Talks held in Islamabad, Pakistan, between Iran and the United States have so far failed to produce concrete results, further contributing to rising fuel prices.
