Rwandan police peacekeepers RWAFPU3-3 return home after completing a year-long UN MINUSCA mission in the Central African Republic.

On Wednesday, March 11, a contingent of Rwandan police officers serving under the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic returned home through Kigali International Airport after completing more than a year of service.

The returning unit, known as RWAFPU3-3, had been deployed under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic and was led by SSP Thomas Kayonga. The team has now been replaced by another contingent, RWAFPU3-4, commanded by CSP Emmanuel Hitayezu, who are expected to serve for the next year.

Upon arrival at Kanombe, the officers were welcomed by CP Yahya Kamunuga, who represented the leadership of the Rwanda National Police.

He praised the officers for their professionalism and dedication during their deployment in Central Africa.

“We came to welcome you back just as we escorted you when you left because the mission you were assigned was carried out successfully. You performed your duties professionally, and the police leadership appreciates your efforts,” he said.

He also encouraged them to continue demonstrating discipline, professionalism, and teamwork as they resume their duties of protecting the safety of Rwandans and their property.

Speaking on behalf of the returning team, SP Bernard Gatete said that during their deployment in Bangassou, they fulfilled their primary mission of protecting civilians while also supporting community development initiatives.

“In addition to protecting civilians in Bangassou, we also engaged in activities that helped improve the lives of the local population,” Gatete explained.

These initiatives included providing access to clean water, organizing monthly community work with residents and local security forces, offering medical services, and establishing a youth football team called Amahoro FC to strengthen relations with the community.

Gatete added that their deployment coincided with elections in the Central African Republic, and the unit played a role in securing the electoral process, including ensuring the safe transportation of election materials.
