Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, has congratulated the national football team of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Leopards, after securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a message shared on social media, the minister described the achievement as historic for the country, noting that DR Congo will return to the global tournament for the first time in 52 years. The last time the nation participated was in 1974, when it was still known as Zaïre.

He said this was a great and historic victory for DR Congo and wished the team success in the upcoming matches.

Nduhungirehe also pointed out that despite ongoing security challenges in parts of the eastern region, many Rwandans continue to support the Leopards, especially those with roots in DR Congo.

His message followed similar congratulatory remarks from other Rwandan officials, including government spokesperson Yolande Makolo and deputy spokesperson Jean Maurice Uwera, who also praised the team’s success.

DR Congo secured their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a narrow 1-0 victory over Jamaica in a playoff match held on March 31, 2026, at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara, Mexico.

The decisive goal was scored by defender Axel Tuanzebe in extra time, during the 100th minute, after both teams had remained goalless throughout regular time.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, and this tournament will mark a significant return for DR Congo on the world stage.
