Donald Trump, President of the United States, has announced that U.S. military forces will remain positioned near Iran while awaiting a final peace agreement.

In a statement posted on Truth Social on April 8, 2026, Trump said U.S. naval vessels, aircraft, and troops would stay on standby and be ready to strike if Iran refuses to sign a deal.

“All U.S. ships, planes, troops, and other military assets will remain in position near Iran until a real and lasting agreement is reached and respected,” he stated.

On March 26, 2026, Trump had given Iran a 10-day deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil route through which about 20% of the world’s petroleum supply passes.

On April 5, 2026, just two days before the deadline expired, he reiterated the ultimatum, warning that Iran had only 48 hours left to comply or face severe consequences.

When the deadline expired on April 7, Trump warned of potential military action targeting Iran’s government and major energy infrastructure, including oil and nuclear facilities.

However, shortly before the deadline, he announced a pause in planned military action following talks with leadership in Pakistan, which had called for a ceasefire and dialogue between the two sides.

Meanwhile, Iran warned that it would permanently close the Strait of Hormuz if the United States launches strikes on its oil refineries or nuclear facilities, raising concerns of further escalation in the region.
