A delegation from UNICEF has held talks with leaders of AFC/M23 following a recent drone attack that killed three people, including a staff member of the UN agency.
The delegation was led by Gilles Fagninou, Regional Director for West and Central Africa, who traveled to Goma to assess the situation on the ground.
Upon arrival, the team was received by AFC/M23 coordinator Corneille Nangaa, alongside the group’s political, legal and diplomatic head Bertrand Bisimwa.
Focus on Security Situation
Discussions between both sides focused on the security situation following a drone strike carried out on March 11, 2026, which targeted areas in Goma.
AFC/M23 accused the coalition of Democratic Republic of the Congo’s armed forces (FARDC) of orchestrating the attack, alleging it violated a ceasefire agreement reached last year.
Humanitarian Concerns
Fagninou had earlier been in Kinshasa, where he met senior government officials before heading to North Kivu.
According to AFC/M23, the visit aimed at assessing the humanitarian conditions of civilians living in areas under its control.
The meeting comes amid growing concerns over civilian safety and the impact of ongoing hostilities on humanitarian operations in eastern DR Congo.
