A ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran has quickly come under strain following Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon that killed more than 250 people.
In the early hours of Wednesday, April 8, 2026, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington and Tehran had agreed to a two-week ceasefire aimed at de-escalating tensions.
As part of the agreement, Iran had committed to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route through which around 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
However, just hours after the announcement, Iran said it had once again closed the strait, citing Israeli strikes on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon as a violation of the ceasefire terms.
The Israeli attacks reportedly killed more than 250 people and injured over 900. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the ceasefire did not apply to Israeli military operations against Hezbollah, while Iran insisted that such actions were part of the agreement.
U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance said Iran had requested that Israel halt its operations against Hezbollah during negotiations, but this condition was not formally included in the final agreement.
“If Iran chooses to undermine these talks over a conflict that does not directly involve them, and one in which the United States has not claimed participation, that is their decision. We believe it would be a mistake,” Vance said.
Pakistan, which acted as a mediator, had indicated that Lebanon was part of the broader ceasefire understanding.
Before tensions resurfaced, Iran had released three oil tankers, including two Iranian vessels and one Chinese ship, allowing them to transit.
Currently, nearly 500 vessels are reportedly waiting in the Persian Gulf for clearance to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.
Tensions between Iran and the United States have since escalated again, as both sides prepare for further talks scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026, in Islamabad, Pakistan. The U.S. delegation is expected to be led by Vice President J.D. Vance.
