Irankunda Grace Divine, popularly known as DJ Ira, has responded to Burundians who continue to attack her on social media after she obtained Rwandan citizenship.
The DJ, who has gained significant popularity in the music mixing industry, told critics from Burundi to stop targeting her, saying they only came to know her because of Rwanda and that she does not regret the decision she made.
DJ Ira first requested Rwandan citizenship from President Paul Kagame on March 16, 2025, during a large public gathering at BK Arena in Kigali.
Since making the request, she has faced criticism from some Burundians who labeled her a traitor and even warned her not to consider returning to Burundi.
A year after receiving Rwandan citizenship, DJ Ira said that the backlash has not stopped, explaining that some people from Burundi continue to insult and threaten her on social media.
She reminded her critics that Burundian laws allow dual citizenship, arguing that her decision to obtain Rwandan nationality should not be treated as an unusual or controversial matter.
DJ Ira also told those attacking her that many of them only learned about her because of the opportunities she received in Rwanda, where she was given a platform to showcase her talent despite being a foreigner.
