Évariste Ndayishimiye, President of Burundi, was received by his counterpart Ibrahim Traoré during a working and friendship visit to Burkina Faso.

According to Burundi’s presidential office, Ntare Rushatsi, Ndayishimiye arrived in Ouagadougou on April 20, 2026.

The statement said the Burundian leader, who currently chairs the African Union (AU), was welcomed with special honors upon his arrival.

The office of Burkina Faso’s presidency also announced that Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who currently leads the regional bloc of Sahel states, welcomed Ndayishimiye and expressed appreciation for the visit.

Officials indicated that the trip is linked to relations between the Confederation of Sahel States (AES) and the African Union.

The visit is expected to focus on strengthening dialogue and improving relations between the AU and the Sahel countries that were suspended from the continental body following military takeovers in recent years.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Guinea later formed the Confederation of Sahel States, which is currently led by Capt. Traoré.

These countries were suspended from the African Union after military coups that took place between 2021 and 2022.

Recently, President Capt. Ibrahim Traoré often seen carrying a pistol on his waist said that Burkina Faso does not need the kind of democracy promoted by what he described as colonial powers.
