Europe Faces Possible Jet Fuel Shortage That Could Disrupt Summer Flights

Europe is facing a growing risk of running short of jet fuel, a situation that could disrupt air travel during the busy summer season starting in June 2026.

The head of the International Energy Agency warned that the continent currently has jet fuel reserves that may last only about six weeks if supply pressures continue.

The looming shortage is largely linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which have affected global energy supply chains and pushed fuel prices higher.

As a result, several airlines are being forced to take drastic measures in order to continue operating.

For instance, the Dutch airline KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced that it has suspended about 160 flights due to the sharp rise in jet fuel prices.

Meanwhile, the British low-cost carrier EasyJet reported losing £25 million in just the past month as a result of the soaring fuel costs.

Because of these pressures, EasyJet expects a significant pre-tax loss that could reach £560 million in the six months leading up to March.

The financial strain has already affected the company’s market performance, with the value of EasyJet plc (EZJ) shares dropping by about 9%.

Passengers have been advised to prepare for possible increases in ticket prices, additional fuel surcharges, and potential cancellations of some flights as airlines struggle to cope with the rising costs.
